Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are back as Debbie and Pete, picking up in their marriage where they left off in "Knocked Up."
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Ever wonder what happened to Alison's sister and brother-in-law from "Knocked Up"? The dynamic duo of Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Pete (Paul Rudd) had a few key scenes in the film, including Debbie taking Alison (Katherine Heigl) to the club where she meets Seth Rogen's character.

Now Judd Apatow aims to brings us back into the lives of the couple as Debbie celebrates her 40th birthday in "This Is 40." Continually lying about her age as she refuses to accept it, Debbie wonders if she's living the best life possible and decides she and Pete need to make some changes.

"I've made a list," she tells her husband in a scene from the trailer, which was released on Friday (April 27). "It's the 'do-better' list. We're 40 years old, if we don't do it now, when are we going to do it?"

Read on for more on five key scenes from the clip!

Counting the Rings
At the gynecologist's office, the nurses try to figure out if Debbie was born in 1972, '74 or '75 since her paperwork lists a range of dates of birth. When Debbie finally blurts out, "I lie about my age, OK? OK?" her gynecologist responds, "I know how old you are. I'm counting the rings." And with that line, we know typical Apatow humor will be on display in this flick. After that exchange, Debbie decides it's time for a change and makes a list of the top three things she and her husband need to focus on now that they're in their 40s: exercise, the kids' education and being patient.

Exercise Every Day
In one scene, Debbie works with a personal trainer, which allows the filmmakers to bring back Jason Segel's "Knocked Up" character, also named Jason. "I can turn your body into a boner machine," he tells Debbie. When she points out that every woman gives him a boner, he replies, "Don't sell yourself short," before adding in a whisper, "Barb doesn't give me a boner." Looks like Jason's crush on Alison's sister never went away.

Get Involved in School
As Pete confronts a mother whose son is picking on his daughter, "Bridesmaids" star Melissa McCarthy makes a cameo as the confrontational mommy. She tells Pete to get his daughter's meds right and Pete calls her son an animal. When Pete gives her shoulder a little shove, she screams, "You touched my nipple!" When he tells her he merely touched her below her shoulder, she replies, "I have very high nipples!" How Rudd kept from breaking into laughter during that scene is beyond us.

More Patience With the Kids
Another key scene opens with Pete and Debbie's daughters pulling each other's hair as they fight in the back seat of the car. It then cuts to them at the dinner table, where Debbie announces they're cutting back on the girls' gadget use so they'll spend more time outside. She suggests instead that they build a fort, to which the exasperated eldest daughter exclaims, "And do what in the fort?" When Debbie says, "You don't need technology," the youngest daughter holds an iPhone up to her mouth and says, "No technology," as a monkey on the screen mimics her words.

Payback Time
The final scene shows Pete spread-eagle on a bed, holding a mirror up to his crotch trying to look at ... something. (We honestly don't want to know what.) When he asks Debbie to take a look, she asks if they can just keep a small shred of mystery in their relationship. Pete replies, "I saw you have babies — payback time." At least being in your 40s isn't boring.

"This Is 40" is set to hit theaters Christmas 2012.

Kardashians $40 Million Richer: Thanks E!

Well, if you weren’t already sick of the Kardashian klan already, you soon will be. The power family just signed a three year, $40 million deal with E!. The Kardashians certainly are raking it in. They already took over E! for seven strong seasons of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and they will continue for three more. I have to admit, it is the best show E! has and I used to watch like a train wreck. Till Kimmy went and got all stuck up with her quickie wedding, it totally turned me off. But I still tune in occasionally, cause like I said, it is the best show they have and sometimes nothing else is on. You will see the entire Kardashian Krew – Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian Odom, Rob Kardashian, Bruce Jenner, Kris Jenner, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner. Scott and Mason supposedly penned a deal of their own. I hope we see more of that cutie, and I don’t mean Scott. The $3 million doesn’t include other endorsements or projects for the family, or their spin offs, “Kourtney and Kim Take New York” and “Khloe and Lamar.” The most recent season of “Keeping Up With [...]

'Walking Dead' Creator Stays 'Invincible' During Show's Hiatus

Comic-book writer talks to MTV News about what to expect in season three, which begins filming next week.
By Josh Wigler

Photo: AMC

Robert Kirkman is a busy man. Not only is the comic book writer and executive producer behind the flesh-craving juggernaut known as "The Walking Dead" currently hard at work on the AMC series' upcoming third season — "We begin filming next week," Kirkman told MTV News during a recent interview — he's also keeping his nose buried in the paneled page, cooking up brand new highs and lows for longtime readers of his flagship titles.

In the pages of Kirkman's superhero epic "Invincible," the writer has put lead character Mark Grayson through the wringer recently. "He's been a bit under the weather, slightly near death," Kirkman cracked during our chat. Replacing him in the yellow-and-blue tights for the time being is Bulletproof, an "Invincible" mainstay who always harbored a secret desire to wear the Invincible uniform. It's all part of the build-up toward the milestone issue #100, launching in January 2013.

"That's actually the 10-year anniversary of the first issue shipping. We totally shipped some issues late to make sure the timing worked out," he joked. "We know what we're doing here!"

Staying in the "Invincible" universe, Kirkman's bringing the superhero team at the center of "Guarding the Globe" back for an all-new ongoing series from writer Phil Hester ("Firebreather") and illustrator Todd Nauck ("Young Justice"), with the Bulletproof-Invincible tagging along for the ride.

"He'll be a big part of that series," Kirkman revealed, adding that "Guarding the Globe" was created out of a desire to explore the many characters that "Invincible" doesn't have room to focus on in depth. "Corey Walker, Ryan Ottley and I have created a bunch of characters for Invincible, just something that we'd like to do. After we'd done 100 issues, we figured if we gave everyone a page, we'd still only see them every four or five issues. There are just so many characters we never get around to showing or doing anything interesting with. It makes sense to have this second book that can focus on Brit, Black Samson and some of the newer cast like Yeti and Kaboomerang, a favorite of mine."

Of course, Kirkman's also been working on a little thing you may have heard about: "The Walking Dead." Like "Invincible," the "Walking Dead" comic book series is rapidly approaching its 100th issue. The milestone event will hit comic shops this July, right in time for Comic-Con, and smack dab in the middle of the writer's "Something to Fear" story line.

"They basically discovered this larger community that's part of a network," Kirkman said of what's been happening in recent issues of "Walking Dead." "To be a part of this network and to share resources, they have to become involved in this sort of barter system, where everybody contributes where they can to get something in return. Rick realizes that the only thing he can contribute is protection and, essentially, being a badass — because everyone in his group is a bunch of badasses. This other group is beholden to this very violent group of people who basically rule through intimidation. Rick says, 'I'll take care of this group for you if you put us into your bartering network, and give us food.' Now Rick has to go back to his allies and sell them on it. He's gone out on a limb and volunteered them for something very dangerous."

Very dangerous indeed, if the recently revealed "Walking Dead" #100 cover is any indication. The illustration depicts the most prominent deceased characters from "Walking Dead" lore strewn about a virtually endless pile of bodies — needless to say, don't go seeking out the cover if you're afraid of "Walking Dead" TV spoilers. Given the nature of the upcoming arc, it's looking like even more bodies will join that pile by the time issue #101 hits shelves.

"Maybe slightly before #101," he teased. "We'll see."

Kirkman's work in comics goes far beyond "Invincible," "Guarding the Globe" and "Walking Dead." His latest book, is currently developing for television (once again through AMC). At the moment, however, much of the writer's time is devoted to "Walking Dead" season three, which begins production next week and hits airwaves next fall. Season two cleaned house on several fan-favorite characters including Shane and Dale, leaving the door wide open for some new memorable faces, such as the despicable Governor played by British actor David Morrissey.

But easily the most anticipated newcomer of the bunch is Michonne, the sword-wielding zombie killer introduced in the season-two finale. Danai Gurira plays the role in season three, and Kirkman said she has a lot of hard work ahead of her.

"Danai is an absolutely fantastic actress," he said. "That role is going to be absolutely grueling. It'll put her through her paces. She'll have to do a lot of sword work. I can't say a lot about what she's going to do, but everyone who has read the comic knows Michonne is a badass. We'll see a lot of that in the show as well. Danai has really been diving into that head first with lots of sword training. We begin filming next week, so we'll be working with her a lot, and we're excited to have her on board."

What do you think of Robert Kirkman's comic book updates? Are you excited to see Michonne more in season three? Let us know in the comments section below!

They are all still hitting the studio to make hit records, and that lends a great deal of credibility to their opinions when they critique a contestant's performance. We don't mean to slight Abdul or Scherzinger, but you could argue that a legacy singer who hasn't released an album in over 17 years and a performer who has had a difficult time getting her own solo singing career off the ground aren't the best judges of who does and does not have "The X Factor." </P><P> </P><P>On the other hand, Spears may be. <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/03/29/britney-spears-femme-fatale-reviews/">Last year's <i>Femme Fatale</i></a> gave Spears three top-10 singles &#8212; the most of any of her seven albums &#8212; and earned some of the best reviews of her career. While it's true that she did not write or produce much of the record, she was most certainly involved in picking her collaborators, which actually could speak well of her ability to know talent when she sees it. Spears also smartly chose red-hot rapper Nicki Minaj to open on the North American leg of her tour. </P><P> </P><P>When it comes to the contemporary pop music scene, Spears knows what works. </P><P> </P><P><big><b>Con: She's not known for her singing</b></big><br> </P><P>Unlike Aguilera, whose talent as a vocalist is indisputable, Spears is not known for her singing. By signing her to judge and mentor a singing competition, "X Factor" producers are setting themselves up for inevitable criticism. "Who is Britney Spears to judge a singing competition?" critics will scream (and they won't be wrong). </P><P> </P><P>When Aguilera critiques a performer's vocals, she speaks with authority &#8212; and her ear for singing proved to make her the most discerning judge on the "Voice" panel during the <a href="/news/articles/1679565/the-voice-christina-aguilera-jonathas-usher.jhtml">blind auditions</a>. Spears' judging style will likely be based on liking what's already there, but she's not going to have much insight on missed notes or pitch, which will cripple her ability to further mentor her team. How can she help them improve as vocalists when it's a truth universally acknowledged that she's not really a vocalist herself? </P><P> </P><P><i>Do you think Britney Spears is a good choice for "The X Factor"? Let us know in the comments below.</i></p>

Mila Kunis' Chic LAX Arrival

Arriving in town from a long flight, Mila Kunis was spotted at LAX Airport in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday afternoon (April 29).

The brunette beauty kept her look clean and simple with a fresh face as she rocked an olive green jacket with a pair of pretty suede booties as she took a break from the recent romance rumors between her and Ashton Kutcher.

In career news, her and the cast of “That 70’s Show” recently reunited to film a special that looked back on the series, which ran from 1998 to 2006 and talks are in place to possibly shoot a movie.

"I can't tell you it's really happening, but we're thinking that a "That '70s Movie" would probably be more appropriate than a '70s [TV] reunion,” Wilmer Valderrama told E! News on Thursday (April 26).

Although nothing has been confirmed, we think that would make for a great reunion!

Katherine Heigl Adopts Second Baby

Actress Katherine Heigl and hubby Josh Kelley have a new addition to their family. It has been confirmed that the couple has adopted their second child together Heigl’s rep has confirmed that she and Kelley have adopted another baby. People.com was the first to break the story and is reporting that Katherine and Josh are the proud parents of another little girl. The new bundle of joy joins big sister Naleigh, who is three years old and was adopted by the couple from South Korea. Unfortunately that is pretty much all the detailed information that is being released as of now, however I would be willing to be all will be revealed in some sort of big magazine display, just my two cents. It is no secret that Katherine is all about adopting. She admitted long ago that adopting children is something that her and her husband of almost five years talked about adopting before they even became engaged. However that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want biological children because she has also made it clear she does want them, apparently she wants a slew of children. As you may or may not know Heigl’s older sister Meg was adopted from [...]

'Avengers' Already A Smash Overseas

Superhero movie, due Stateside in early May, is already breaking records in foreign markets.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The Avengers have already started to assemble overseas, and early box-office reports are spelling very good things for Marvel's tentpole. The superhero movie that brings together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk has reportedly made $12.5 million in a handful of foreign markets and is already breaking records, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In Australia, "The Avengers" has already banked $7 million, a total that has only been beaten by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which earned $8 million during its Down Under debut.

The foreign rollout has proven lucrative elsewhere, too, as France added $3 million to the total.

Early tracking estimated that "The Avengers" could make more than $150 million during its early May opening weekend in the U.S. That would put the film in the same class as "Spider-Man 3," "The Hunger Games," "The Dark Knight" and "Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

This could potentially mean the biggest debut for a Marvel Studios movie yet. "Iron Man 2" currently holds that honor. The Robert Downey Jr. sequel opened to $128 million back in 2010. That's followed by the first "Iron Man" at $98 million.

"The Avengers" has the added advantage of higher ticket prices. The film is playing both in 3-D and in IMAX 3-D, so each individual ticket will add more to the final total. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" saw a large bump in its record-breaking run thanks in part to higher prices attached to 3-D showings.

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

'Raven' Star John Cusack On Becoming Poe: There's An App For That

Actor opens up about the challenges of getting into the tortured mind of Edgar Allan Poe.
By Matt Goodhue, with reporting by Kara Warner

It goes without saying that in order to achieve an impressive onscreen performance, an actor must enter into the mind, body, and environment of the character he or she is portraying. While fictionalized characters require imagination and innovation, historical figures depend on research and character study. And few historical individuals are more dark, complex and mysterious than Edgar Allan Poe.

MTV News recently spoke with veteran thespian John Cusack, who portrays the legendary poet and storyteller in the upcoming film "The Raven", and asked what it takes to really enter into the world of such a puzzling man.

"It's like an app, right? Like on your phone, 'Go to Darkness.' You press the Poe app," Cusack joked.

"That's sort of how the psyche works, too, in a way," he clarified. "So, I think you just try to activate it and bring it to life."

So, how did Cusack bring it to life? On top of reading Poe's works and studied his biography, healso tried to tap into his emotions.

"If you think of movies like in a dream language, then there's kind of a dream logic to it," Cusack said. "And then you just follow the feelings. You use the feelings, I think that's what it is."

"The Raven" hits theaters April 27, so fans of Poe and his stories will soon discover how Cusack brings the horror-writer back to life.

Check out everything we've got on "The Raven."

'Five-Year Engagement': The Reviews Are In!

Critics agree that talented cast of Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt and Alison Brie brings honest script to life.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Photo: Universal Pictures

"The Five-Year Engagement," starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, doesn't adhere to the same predictable romantic-comedy formula audiences are used to seeing. It doesn't open with a comedic meet-cute, and there's no quirky first date: The film follows Violet Barnes (Blunt) and Tom Solomon (Segel) after they're already engaged.

When we meet the characters, their hurdle is how to survive a long engagement due to Violet's budding postdoctoral career.

While some critics believe the movie is a half-hour too long, most agree that the talented cast of comedians brings the honest, insightful script to life. While "Five-Year Engagement" may not be the "Bridesmaids" of 2012, the reviews suggest the film will be a weekend hit.

The Story
"The first 45 minutes or so of 'The Five-Year Engagement,' which Segel wrote with director Nicholas Stoller ('Get Him to the Greek'), pop and zing with both comic fizz and refreshing authenticity. Set to a delicious soundtrack dominated by Van Morrison standards, Tom's and Violet's lives feel more real than the usual Hollywood confections." — Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

The Cast
"This Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy bares familiar Apatow markings — bawdy humor, crass jokes, coarse language — but steers clear of gross-out gags. Sweetness wins out in the end, and the film gets by on the charm of its leads and a stellar supporting cast, led by 'Parks and Recreation's' Chris Pratt." — Adam Graham, Detroit News

"This seems like another breakthrough for Blunt, who demonstrates an ample gift for physical comedy. She and Segel make an inspired team." — Lou Lumenick, New York Post

"Alison Brie ... with a British accent and a high-octane goofiness that will astonish those who know her best as Trudy Campbell on 'Mad Men' pretty much steals the whole movie as Violet's fertile, impulsive sister." — A.O. Scott, New York Times

The Script
"Every scene in 'The Five-Year Engagement' — virtually every part of every scene — is carefully crafted to introduce an original comic situation, work it and build on it. The movie is a precision instrument with no parts jammed together, just everything smooth and functioning. Take a moment to notice the actual work going on here, and you'll be impressed at the skill. Even then, you'll be dragged back into the picture's spell in less than a minute. ... The screenplay doesn't pump up the stakes; it makes nothing extreme. These are just two people, and this is the drama of the everyday. The filmmakers trust that you'll be interested in what happens to the couple, and in return they keep it honest." — Mike LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Final Word
"A scene, late in the film, with [Violet and Suzie] trying to have an adult talk in front of Suzie's kids is a laugh riot, mostly because Suzie speaks in the voice of Elmo while Violet does Cookie Monster. OK, you have to be there, but the moment is memorably hilarious. 'The Five-Year Engagement' is like that, moving in fits and starts, but building a rooting interest in its characters that slaps a goofy smile on your face and keeps it there." — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
